Chad Hurley had a background in design and marketing, having worked for eBay and PayPal. Steve Chen was a software engineer who had worked at PayPal and Facebook. Jawed Karim was also a software engineer who had worked at PayPal and was a graduate of the University of Illinois.

The idea for YouTube came about when the founders had difficulty sharing videos from a dinner party. They realized that there was no easy way to share videos online, and that’s when the idea for YouTube was born.
